In His Own Words

When you step onto our stadium grounds you can’t help but notice the success we have had. 9 CIF San Diego Championships since 2000 …2 State Championships…20 consecutive Semi-Final appearances, 27 consecutive playoff appearances you start to realize that the Pirates work hard year round to achieve success.

Working hard to bring back a CIF title to the “O”

By Matthew Romero

It’s been one heck of an off-season for myself and the rest of my Oceanside Pirate teammates. But now we are less than a week away from getting back to business. We had plenty of colleges come through during the recruiting period last spring. Several of my teammates (Tommy Woo, Christian Cronk, Isaia Pao Pao) have received Division 1 offers from schools. A couple have committed already, Jordan Miller Washington, Cedric Bigge-Duren / Washington St. I myself have received interest from schools, but no offers yet. I’m going to continue to work hard and feel confident the offers will come. The fact that I don’t have an offer yet though will not detract me from leading our team to the ultimate team goal another CIF Championship and hopefully an opportunity to play for a CIF State title.
When you step onto our stadium grounds you can’t help but notice the success we have had. 9 CIF San Diego Championships since 2000 alone speaks for itself. During this run we also add 2 State Championships as well. But when you look at 20 consecutive Semi-Final appearances, 27 consecutive playoff appearances you start to realize that the Pirates work hard year round to achieve success.
Last season we lost in the finals and that has given us all the motivation to work hard in the off-season so we can win a CIF title this year. We have all worked hard in 7v7 leagues, winning the San Diego State Passing Tournament and the Battle by the Beach just a few weeks ago. Our line has also competed in lineman challenges and has worked to get to where they need to be.
We have great community support at Oceanside and the stands are full on Friday nights with plenty of Pirate alumni who come out to support us as well. One of the most impressive things I believe though is that 7 of our coaching staff are former Pirates, which just proves the impact that Head Coach John Carroll continues to make on all of us. Last season Coach Carroll had to deal with some medical issues that kept him away for a couple of games and then off the sidelines and in the press box during our entire playoff run. This season he’s back though and we can’t wait to get back to work with him on the field coaching us towards that goal we’ve all worked so hard for, and that’s bringing another CIF title back to the “O”.
