Washington “Game of the Week” – Week 5

Defense was the name of the game in the Bellevue Wolverines’ 24 – 6 win over the Glacier Peak Grizzlies, as there was plenty of hard hitting and old school, smash-mouth football from both teams on October 2. Going into Friday, Glacier Peak was 4-0 and ranked No. 7 in many 3A polls. Bellevue’s only loss came at the hands of Bishop Gorman, considered by many to be the #1 team in the country.

Shoulder pads and helmets could be heard cracking nearly every play, as Bellevue shut out the Grizzlies’ offense – GP’s only score came on Justin Guffey’s 47-yard fumble return, which kept the game very close (10 – 6) early in the 3rd quarter. Glacier Peak often harassed QB Justus Rogers throughout the night, but Bellevue’s overall team strength and speed eventually prevailed. The Wolverines immediately answered Guffey’s score with a long solid drive, capped by a 20 yard TD by RB Ercle Terrell (#21), who later added another 4 yard TD rush in the 4th to seal the deal. Terrell finished with 251 yards on 19 carries.

Bellevue scored on its two opening drives, with an 11-yard run by speedster Christoph Hirota, then a 31-yard Monaghan field goal. Thereafter, the first half was a stalemate as neither team could significantly move the ball. Glacier Peak gave a try at the Wing-T offense, starting sophomore QB Jaxsen Sweum (#17). They later mixed in regular starter Devyn Rainbow (#3) and freshman Ayden Ziomas (#15). But, DE Isaac Garcia (#2), DT Marquis Deweert (#55) and the Wolverines stuffed the Grizzlies’ offense throughout most of the night, allowing only 42 yards on the ground.
